Sediment grain size determines microplastic exposure landscapes for sandy beach macroinfauna

چکیده

Despite the global occurrence of microplastic contamination on sandy beaches, evidence distribution within beaches remains contradictory. When conflicting is used to inform sampling surveys, it increases uncertainty in resulting data. Moreover, hampers spatially explicit risk characterization pollution intertidal fauna. We aimed guide designs for monitoring and quantify macroinfauna exposure microplastics. Microplastic abundance, quantified between 5 mm–66 ?m, lacked a significant zonation across top sediment layer sub-terrestrial, upper lower midlittoral, swash zones at two sites with varying anthropogenic influence microtidal dissipative beach Uruguay. abundance decreased exponentially increasing grain size, as revealed by Bayesian Poisson regression, although decrease was less steep compared prior knowledge regarding – plastic interactions obtained large (millimeter-sized) industrial pellets. Significant differences likely related their proximity freshwater canal. Corresponding field measurements body burdens fibers irregular particles were significantly polychaete Euzonus (Thoracophelia) furcifera, despite its preference finer sediments higher loads, isopods Excirolana braziliensis armata. Results provide critical insights toward representative microplastics sites. Specifically, we caution against limited drift line, instead recommend: 1) reporting morphodynamic characteristics; 2) using clearly defined, ecologically-informed schemes; 3) accounting size covariate normalize among reported levels. The results contribute valuable baseline data realistic landscapes relative preferences macroinfauna, needed laboratory experiments.

Influence of waves and horseshoe crab spawning on beach morphology and sediment grain-size characteristics on a sandy estuarine beach

The effects of wave action and horseshoe crab spawning on the topography and grain-size characteristics on the foreshore of an estuarine sand beach in Delaware Bay, New Jersey, USA were evaluated using data collected over six consecutive high tides. Data were gathered inside and outside a 25 m long exclosure constructed to create a control area free of disturbance by crabs. The density of crabs...

Chapter Five: Effects of Sandy Beach Cusps on Wrack Accumulation, Sediment Characteristics and Macrofaunal Communities

Wrack deposition on sandy beaches varies spatially and is affected by morphological features on the beach-face such as cusps. This study tested a series of hypotheses regarding the differences in wrack deposits, sediments and macrofaunal communities between cusp bays and horns. Bays had greater cover and larger pieces of wrack than horns. Sediment organic-matter content was greater on horns tha...

Wave and sediment dynamics along a shallow subtidal sandy beach inhabited by modern stromatolites.

To help define the habitat of modern marine stromatolites, wave-dominated flow and sediment transport were studied in the shallow subtidal region (1-2 m depth) along the slightly concave, windward face of Highborne Cay, Exuma, Bahamas - the only face of the cay that includes a population of stromatolites concentrated near the region of highest curvature of the beach. Wave energy impacting this ...

Grain size distribution effects on phosphate sorption by fluvial sediment: implications for modelling sediment- phosphate transport

A sensitivity analysis was performed on a sediment-phosphate transport model by determining the phosphate sorption characteristics of separated size fractions and prepared size distributions of fine-grained ( < 64 jum) river sediment typically transported in two southern Ontario streams. The Langmuir equation was used to quantify phosphate release from the sediment. Results of the study indicat...
